VIII. International Biennial of Drawing Pilsen 2012

A very significant gathering focused on fine arts has been taking place in Plzen every other even year: International Biennial of Drawing Pilsen. In very simplified overview, there are four basic parts of this competitive exhibition – the announcement of the competition, its evaluation, public presentation of the results and accompanying programmes. The first part was accomplished at the end of May and we are pleased to say that the number of participants has again increased, approximately 15 percent over the previous Biennial competitions.Here are the numbers: 437 registered artists from 38 countries, 1603 drawings in total.During the entire week ending on July 13th, a panel composed of seven experts evaluated the drawings. In the process of several rounds they selected the drawings for the exhibition and the prizes, which are not finacial. The winners are awarded with a special artwork.The panel, composed of experts from Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Germany, Turkey and also from the Czech Republic awarded the main prize, „Grand prix“. Drawings which were awarded other prizes were chosen by the region’s representative and the mayor.Also the awards by Czech, Slovak, Hungarian and German fine arts organizations were selected. The students of The Institute of Art and Design affiliated with The University of West Bohemia chose the award-winning drawing. In addition to the prizes awarded to art works the panel selected some drawings for its „short list,“ which is reserved for drawings of excellent quality.All awarded drawings will be presented to the public in several exhibitions, including the main exhibiton which will have its opening on October 3rd.At present, the acompanying exhibitions and programmes, including the international conference on the subject: “The situation and status of the artist in the context of the contemporary world“ have been undergoing preparation.In June the plenary meeting of international experts was held in Pilsen. On the agenda there was a strategy for the coming projected activities regarding the Biennial competition until the year 2015, when Pilsen will became the European Capital of Culture.

Opening of the traveling exhibiton in Písek

The next exhibition traveled to Prácheň Museum in Písek. Exhibition called „The best work of VIII. International Biennial of Drawing Pilsen 2012 „was launched on 2nd of May 2013 in the Gallery of Prácheň Museum. For this exhibition were selected 45 authors. It is worth noting drawings of Martin Zálešák from Brno who received at the Biennial of Drawing Pilsen 2012 the main price Grand Prix. Visitors can see the artwork of award-winning artists and other high-quality works by artists selected by an international jury at last year’s competition.
